Cleveland - What a Surprise!

Do you really know Cleveland? Well, take a day to find out! The "Cleveland - What a Surprise Tour" will take you on a professionally narrated tour through the Downtown area (including North Coast Harbor with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Great Lakes Science Center, the Browns Stadium), the Flats and Warehouse Districts, Ohio City, Gateway, Playhouse Square, along the old Millionaire's Row, past the Cleveland Play House and Cleveland Clinic Campus and through our renewed cultural center at University Circle. After a drive through the historic Cultural Gardens there will be a brief stop at the Rockefeller Park Greenhouse with the return drive along our Lake Erie shoreline. This part of your day generally takes 2-3 hours and is usually the morning portion of this tour package.

Lunch generally takes about 1 hour at the charming University Inn in the trendy Tremont neighborhood. Delicious old-fashioned home style food is served in a cafeteria style atmosphere which has been home to Cleveland's politicians and colorful characters since 1923.

Afternoon stops can be tailored to your group's specific interests and can include:

You may take up to 3 hours for your afternoon activities and you may choose activities other than those shown above. Our pricing does not include afternoon activities which require an admission fee. Fees may be handled separately by the client, or we can re-price this tour with the fees included. When we are asked to set up your afternoon activity there may be a small coordination fee added on to your charges.

"Cleveland - What a Surprise" does not require a lot of walking for the city tour portion, but does require guests to handle a tray at the University Inn lunch stop. Your additional level of activity depends upon your afternoon choices.

Price: Please contact one of our charter representatives for the per person cost of this tour. Note: The West Side Market is closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but an ethnic markets tour can still be conducted on those days without going to the West Side Market.

The tour is approximately 6-7 hours long depending upon pick-up location. Fees shown do not include any activities requiring an admission fee. Minimum 25 people required.

Lake View Cemetery and Little Italy

Garfield Memorial at Lake View CemeteryLake View Cemetery is a 285-acre nationally known "garden of history" located only 6 miles east of downtown Cleveland. It is estimated that 90% of the significant people in Cleveland's history are buried at Lake View amidst the rolling hills, still waters and arboretum-like plantings of unusual trees and plants from around the world.

Our narrated tour provides an upbeat look at both lives and legacies, from Lake View's most famous resident, John D. Rockefeller, to Eliot Ness of "Untouchables" fame and Ernest Ball, who wrote "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling". The Lake View tour features a stop at the remarkable Wade Chapel (with an interior totally designed by the famous Tiffany Glass Studios in New York) featuring one of the finest examples of Tiffany windows in the country. Our second stop at Lake View is the magnificent Garfield Presidential Memorial, resting place for James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States. The tour always has a few surprises and is a visual delight in the spring (thanks to azaleas, rhododendron, budding trees and some 100,000 clumps of daffodils on Daffodil Hill), summer (when all trees are in full bloom) and fall (when the fall foliage is at its peak). Many photographers love the shadows and stark contrasts of winter days.

After our time at Lake View it's on to Little Italy for a quick overview. Here, at the turn of the 20th century, Italian immigrants found great comfort in settling along the banked streets which closely resembled their homeland. Lunch will be at one of the Italian restaurants "on the hill" followed by time to explore the area's art galleries, bakeries and shops filled with artisan created jewelry, fine arts and unique gifts.

Price: Please contact one of our charter representatives for the per person cost of this tour.

This tour is approximately 6-7 hours long depending upon pick-up location and does require walking both at Lake View and in Little Italy. Lunch is at an Italian restaurant on Murray Hill and features a pre-set menu. Minimum 25 people required.

Steeples & Spires - Church Tour

On Steeples and Spires we visit the following sampling of the more than 1,000 churches which stand throughout our city, considered important for their architecture, their history and/or their social significance: St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ohio City, which served the Irish community and contains interesting architectural details. Old Stone Church is the oldest structure on Public Square and features four magnificent Tiffany windows in its main sanctuary. St. Theodosius Russian Orthodox Cathedral is best known for its 13 distinctive onion-shaped domes, a special part of Cleveland's skyline since the turn of the 20th century. It has been called "the best example of Russian religious architecture in the United States." Pilgrim Congregational Church is a Romanesque Revival building which used a radical sanctuary design while providing a bowling alley and performing stage for its community. Trinity Cathedral is a true "Millionaire's Row" church, considered by many to be one of the country's finest examples of a small gothic cathedral. St. Stanislaus, in Slavic Village, has been heralded for its intricate and ornate interior restored to glory with a 1.5 million dollar restoration.

Eliot NessThe Eliot Ness Tour

Join us as we take you back to the lawless Cleveland of the 1930's when corruption was rampant and the notorious "Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run" was on his murderous rampage. We'll explore the city that Eliot Ness roamed in the 1930's and 40's as Cleveland's Safety Director, after his national success breaking up Al Capone's stranglehold on Chicago. You'll get to know an Eliot Ness totally unlike the characterizations in the movies or television. He was a suave, college educated lawman who enjoyed boating, tennis, women, cats and scotch. A scrupulously honest man, he cleaned up the corruption which was so much a part of Cleveland during the Depression years and set the course for today's modern law enforcement methods.

Your narrated tour will include the Flats and other sites made famous by the graphic and gruesome Kingsbury Run Torso Murders, Downtown Cleveland with a stop at the Police History Museum, University Circle where Eliot Ness lived for a period of time, and Lake View Cemetery to see the headstone for Eliot Ness who died at age 55, not long after an unsuccessful run for Mayor of Cleveland. The tour includes lunch at the University Inn and a copy of Paul Heimel's fascinating book Eliot Ness: The Real Story.

Price: Please contact one of our charter representatives for the per person cost of this tour. This tour is approximately 4-5 hours long depending on pick up location and does require walking and standing. Minimum 25 people required. Ask about our Great Lakes Brewery option!
